How Do I Manage Fear?

Fear is a paralyzing force and many in today’s world experience it far too often. Many fear so many things in their lives until they have stopped living. A speaker at one of our Mother and Daughter Luncheons defined Fear as “False Evidence Appearing Real.

Chances are the things that we fear the most never happen in our lives; however, if we don’t direct our minds toward a positive God-given direction, we invite calamity and destruction to take over. Then we blame God screaming, “How could you let this happen to me? I’m serving you and look what you did to me!” We become cowardly, so we blame others instead of looking into the mirror of truth, take responsibility for our poor thinking, and choose to believe the Word of God.

We all experience fear at one time or another. Those who give into the fear retreat while those who show courage in spite of fear advance. I recently read an article written by a British theologian, John Henty Newton: “Fear not that your life will come to an end, but that it will never have a beginning. Without the courage to begin, you have no future. Those who lack the courage to take risk and those who have the courage to take risk experience the same amount of fear in life.”

Fear is found 400 times in scripture with 385 times associated with fear. There are many stories in the Bible that tell of people who started out in fear but got a grip and put God’s promises in place of that fear. How do you manage fear? Do you embrace it by God’s word or escape it through the feelings? Do you put yourself in a position that stretches your faith or do you withdraw far into your comfort zone? Only when you have answered these questions can you begin to manage and overcome your fears.
