Washing the Disciples’ Feet
God has called me to help others in this journey called life, to encourage, to teach, to “wash one another’s feet” in a spiritual sense. I thought of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet, and it reminded me of my own situation. For some time, I have been dealing with plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of tissues in the sole of the foot that can cause heel or arch pain. I went to a foot specialist and got medication and cream to relieve pain when I walk. And my son gave me a wonderful foot bathing machine/massager for Christmas. What a blessing these are!
You might be thinking, “Why on earth is she putting her business in a blog for everyone to see?” I’ll tell you why. Despite what you encounter in your life, there may be times God will not let you escape some ailments. And yet His commission never changes for what He has called you to do. God understands when we slow a bit, but that never causes Him to say, “It’s okay, you can sit this one out.”
At the Last Supper, Jesus took off his outer clothing and wrapped a towel around his waist. He poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel. Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me. “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” Jesus didn’t back down; he knew what he had to do.
On His way to the cross Jesus never said, “Father, I need a break to catch my breath. Can we resume this ordeal to the cross tomorrow? I’m tired from all the beatings.” No, that wasn’t His attitude because Jesus came to fulfill God’s will to redeem people from the chains and bondage of Satan.
God is ever looking for men and women who will go the last mile with His help and His Word. We should never want to draw back from God’s purpose for us or give an excuse of why we can’t perform our God given task. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phillipians 4:13).
