Listening Spiritual Ears are Important

A dear friend of mine called me Saturday because I missed a huge celebration event honoring women in ministry and I was one of them. I missed the event because so many things were going on that week. My husband had dental surgery, which put him in so much pain that he eventually ended up in the Endodontist’s chair. Then people came in from out of town that we entertained before taking them to their cruise ship, and I was the cook at our house. All these events left me completely exhausted.

When I didn’t appear at the event on Saturday afternoon, my friend told me that the Holy Spirit impressed on her to call to check on me. I am so glad she listened to the spirit of God; she spoke just what I needed to be lifted and energized. So often the Holy Spirit is speaking to us about someone or something and we either ignore it or respond, “I will get around to it”, but we allow other things to crowd out our good intentions to do what the Holy Spirit told us to do originally.

There will always be things in our lives that have to be done. I’ve learned and am still learning that everything cannot have the number one spot on my to-do list. Too often we crowd out the voice of the Holy Spirit in our lives and unfortunately, we count everything else in our lives as priority except God.

When I lived in Minneapolis MN, I had a sticker on our bedroom door that read, ‘Seven prayerless days makes one weak.’ This is just a reminder not to neglect prayer and Bible study for doing these two things will allow you to fine tune your spiritual ears. “Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” (Isaiah 6:8)
